Comments and reviews of Chen Style Taijiquan Practical Method, workshops and Master Chen Zhonghua.
On May 28/2011, Gene Hess & Jay Smith competed in the 32nd Can-Am International Championships at the Richmond Olympic Oval in Richmond, BC.
On Monday, 25th of April we did meet at my flat to review the workshop in Bavaria with Master Chen. Among my students in Berlin there were 4 attending the workshop in Freising nearby Munich, three of them came to this meeting yesterday. But there were some more and one friend of mine, a Taijiquan-Practitioner who got curious about “Practical Method”. Read more

Thank you so much Master Chen and Allan for your time and patient, dedicated teaching over the last two days.
Of the scheduled full week seminar, I was able to attend just the final two days and they were excellent. We worked on foundations with an extra amount of stepping practice. Along with this were Yilu corrections. So much to work on, and really it boils down to how much time is put in practicing the given corrections…
Thank you again!
During this last weekend Feb 12-13 we were honored to have in San Juan, Puerto Rico an awesome Chen Style Practical Method Tai Chi Chuan seminar conducted by Master Chen Zhonghua and assisted by his disciple Todd Elihu. Read more
I have trained several times with Master Chen over the years now and have long accepted that he possesses a skill that is frankly light years beyond my understanding. Read more
I want to thank Michael Calandra for hosting Master Chen Zhonghua who presented an extraordinary seminar. Most interesting to me is that Master Chen never changes his form. It is the same every time I’ve seen him for the past 8 years. Within his near perfect taiji structure, what is continuously changing/improving is his technical precision. He is the living embodiment of true taiji principles. To the next 50 years together!
Last week I had the honour of being inducted into the Chen Taijiquan lineage that flows from Chen Fake to Hong Junsheng to Chen Zhonghua. Master Chen requested that I write about my experience of the ‘hands-on’ part of this lineage transmission. He said he’d been pushing with Dave Dahms and I in order to show us particular things and wanted to know what we felt was different. Read more
Having just arrived home from the frozen tundra of Edmonton, it’s nice to be back in Tampa. The seminar was just what I needed. If any of you have spent time refinishing wooden furniture you may appreciate this. Start with an old scratched up painted and confused piece of wood like a bookcase and strip it all the way down to it’s base, sand out the scratches smooth so the original grain shows clearly. Then oil & polish it. Read more

This is the sixth Toronto workshop I’ve attended. Every workshop has been packed with information, intense training and a few good laughs. We had some very special guests from Italy – Master Bon and Neresini. The two were very friendly and eager to learn and share. Hope they come back soon. Read more

I believe that real progress in Taiji must be the product of many small achievements over many years. I am really pleased that the last three months has been marked by a number of small achievements. Read more
I came to the mountain in June with not much expectation, I saw it as a holiday with a chance to learn taiji. I knew it will be a long journey since I just met Master Chen in February, and through several workshops, I accepted that it will take a long time to gain any real progress.
However, it has become a memorable experience, Read more

The last day started with an in depth Foundation review and exercise followed by a few Silk Reeling exercises to get warmed up. Yilu ,of course, was next on the list with a review of the first 13 moves with repeats and corrections. We now proceeded with Broadsword – a review for most and learning it from scratch for a few individuals. We managed a review of the opening moves and about one third of the form before Read more

I watched the Toronto Workshop 3-4 video today. I got a different understanding on the material presented. Although I was there at the workshop, I didn’t really understand much at the time as I was so new to Taiji. I had no clue on many of the concepts.
I just had my third taiji workshop with Master Chen in the last weekend (May 22-23, 2010). I had an extreme great time in this workshop. I was really glad to have him confirmed my little improvement thus far, in particular: my yilu form is starting to take shape, and I am not moving my hand (or at least as much as before).I would need to continue to work hard, so that I don’t regress, and hopefully continue to improve.
