I was once told that the mark of a good writer is the ability to know his reader. Claiming to be no such thing, I am feeling less guilty about writing this in a very generalized, and most likely, aimless fashion. Read more

This time a long time student of Master Chen James Chan from Philadelphia joined us. Lots of push hand on Sunday as four students from Seattle joined us. Topics covered:

  • In yilu, finish the move and add one: don’t connect the moves together.
  • Door jam principle in push hand.
  • Complete your move in push hand, dont get distracted.
  • To execute on 45 line it feels less friction than meeting opponent force head on, but students always choose to resist and fight instead.

I have been wanting to write about how I started learning taiji for a while. I guess everyone has his/her own story, and I will share mine here. When I looked back at it, I always felt that it was fate and luck with all the stars aligned to be learning from Master Chen.

[singlepic id=3715 w=200 h=150 float=left] Coming to this workshop I wanted to ask Master Chen about some lofty concepts I read recently of Ting 听 Wen 問 Na 拿 Fa 発, also about energy movement I felt in my yilu.

I would like to thank the Ottawa group for organizing a great workshop.  During the workshop, we practice Yilu and the foundation exercises.  An important component of the workshop is understanding the theory and philosophy of Chen Taijiquan. Master Chen covered many concepts but I will only highlight the idea of “Connecting Pairs” and “Clear” Read more

Recently Master Chen was in Ottawa again to teach another three day seminar. On the last day I had the pleasure of attending. It began with some push hands, interspersed with Yilu practice and several exercises. During the course of his instruction Master Chen recounted many interesting stories and examples. Quite a number of concepts and principles were discussed, with the following notes summarizing elements of what I took away from this eventful day. Read more

Thank you so much Master Chen and Allan for your time and patient, dedicated teaching over the last two days.

Of the scheduled full week seminar, I was able to attend just the final two days and they were excellent. We worked on foundations with an extra amount of stepping practice. Along with this were Yilu corrections. So much to work on, and really it boils down to how much time  is put in practicing the given corrections…

Thank you again!

I am very pleased with all materials from Master Chen. I am checking regularly the website and Thank you for making available to a huge audience lots of valuable information, I greatly enjoy all the posts on the Practical Method website. Read more

I want to thank Michael Calandra for hosting Master Chen Zhonghua  who presented an extraordinary seminar.  Most interesting to me is that Master Chen never changes his form.  It is the same every time I’ve seen him for the past 8 years.  Within his near perfect taiji structure, what is continuously changing/improving is his technical precision.  He is the living embodiment of true taiji principles. To the next 50 years together!

Last week I had the honour of being inducted into the Chen Taijiquan lineage that flows from Chen Fake to Hong Junsheng to Chen Zhonghua. Master Chen requested that I write about my experience of the ‘hands-on’ part of this lineage transmission. He said he’d been pushing with Dave Dahms and I in order to show us particular things and wanted to know what we felt was different. Read more

Having just arrived home from the frozen tundra of Edmonton, it’s nice to be back in Tampa. The seminar was just what I needed. If any of you have spent time refinishing wooden furniture you may appreciate this. Start with an old scratched up painted and confused piece of wood like a bookcase and strip it all the way down to it’s base, sand out the scratches  smooth so the original grain shows clearly. Then oil & polish it. Read more

This is the sixth Toronto workshop I’ve attended.  Every workshop has been packed with information, intense training and a few good laughs.  We had some very special guests from Italy – Master Bon and Neresini.  The two were very friendly and eager to learn and share.    Hope they come back soon.
