A BIG thank you to Brennan Toh and John Dahms for organizing the Ottawa-Gatineau Workshop on Chen Style Taijiquan Practical Method that just ended yesterday (2023.10.21-22). This is especially BIG, because both are very busy people and we are all very thankful for their willingness to take time out to help us in our training. (Master Chen Zhonghua was unable to make it to Ottawa this year.)
All participants enjoyed and benefitted a lot from the teachings of Brennan Toh, John Dahms, Hugo Cascoduro, and Rick Pietila. The training, instructions, and demonstrations were outstanding — clear, thorough, practical and effective. Words alone cannot express the degree and extent of change such a workshop can impress upon an individual’s progress in learning Taijiquan/Tai Chi Chuan. I learned a lot and was very impressed and motivated in seeing how the instructors have excelled in their training and development, as proved by the depth and details of their teachings and demonstrations. Their generosity and willingness to share their knowledge are commendable. Special thanks to Hugo Cascoduro for driving all the way from Toronto, together with Suzanna Chwang and Jen, to help out with the workshop. As well, thanks to Rick Pietila (who is currently on work assignment in Ottawa), for also teaching and taking care of the photography/videography at the workshop.

At this workshop, one of the many key things that I learned was the meaning of “potential”. We need to increase our “potential” through stretching. Only through stretching do we find our limits; it is not till then can we make a breakthrough, with the unleashing of our full potential — a switchover.

Today I said goodbye to my Shifu Chen Zhonghua in Gdynia. I just arrived in Vienna, Austria after one month traveling with Shifu, Gerry Gebhart, Chen Ronghua (Curry) and Song Zhenhua (Leo) through 7 European countries.
I met lots of old and new friends. It was great and it’s sad, it has to end. But even the best things in live end…. only to make place for new things.
In the picture below you see Shifu, Chen Xu, Ling Zili and me on my very first Workshop with Shifu in Wuxi, China. And below a picture taken exactly 9 years later in Vicenza Italy with Shifu, Leo, Gerry, Curry and me. With lots of Workshops in between.
There were many highlights along the tour of various nature, like cultural, touristic, culinary, personal and of course Taijiquan Practical Method-ic.
I hope I’ll find the time to render my notes into some articles about those highlights.
To answer one special request by Kevin Chen from Nantes, France briefly: I ate the worst but also the best Hamburger in Italy 😉
By the way:
If you want to practice Chen Style Taijiquan Practical Method in Austria, contact me. I’m living close to Vienna and we have a group here. As a disciple it’s my duty and an honor to propagate this rare art. I can show you the special characteristics of Practical Method. It must be experienced, so I invite you to have a look.
I’m also the coordinator for Practical Method in Europe, so if you want to know if there’s somebody close to you doing Practical Method, just text me.

Speaking of coordination: Thanks to all the host on the tour for the great workshops. And also a big “Thank you!” to their helping hands. It was a great time!

In Six Sealing Four Closing, there must be a stick that does not change direction between the two hands. In Practical Method, there are rotation and resolution. Rotation is not considered a move. Resolution is considered a move as it causes something to change position with respective to the ground. The result is 螺旋缠丝 luo xuan chan si.

This is moving a rotating saw to cut a piece of board. As the saw makes contact of the board, the rotation does not slow down, the saw blade does not change shape as someone pushes the saw through the board (or the board through the blade). The common problem is that we change shape or direction as we move.

General Principles
o Peng
Peng has been one of the most talked about topics in Taijiquan. Hong defined Peng as having two meanings: one is the upward expanding action of ward-off and the other the overall combined expanding energy that permeates all moves of Taiji. It is the latter meaning of Peng that is most important to him. “Without Peng, there is no Taiji.” Read more
