Be Patient 8

by Wilkin Ng on 2010/05/03

On the weekend workshop, Master Chen told me to be patient. Tai Ji ability can not be gained overnight. It involves whole body connection, and this need time to be felt and be strong.

When pushing hands, it is better to take a loss then to use a muscle move that does not conform to Tai Ji principle. Using muscle to push opponents will give you bad habits which are hard to correct later.

Three aspects are important.

  1. The stick/staff must be strong. If it bends, it can not bend in a way that energy stops.
  2. There must be a pivoting point. The pivoting point must not move.
  3. The level should be longer than the load.

Thanks to all who helped the last three days. I am finally in Vicenza at 4:00 am. It was a horrible 3-day race to get to Prague and Vincenza. Sorry I couldn't make it to Prague on time!

Stuck in Helsinki i

by admin on 2010/04/16

Stuck in Helsinki because of the Volcanic Eruption in Iceland. At least we have canceled the workshop for Saturday in Prague. Checked boats and railways but it is very difficult to get out. Might have to travel by rail through Russia. One student from Poland is stuck here with me. He is supposed to travel to Prague with me. His girlfriend is already there waiting for him. Delays and inconveniences!

Thanks for a superb workshop today…really, really impressive…I really liked the hands on aspect, as always and the way you bring the theory to life with such skill and power…and all the while using only a portion of it!

Helsinki on Flickr – Photo Sharing!.

Tomi and Wang Chao came to the airport to pick me up. We first of all went to see Xiuhua, Wang Chao’s mother. She happens to be in Helsinki for personal business. It was nice to see her in Helsinki. The last time I saw her it was in May 2009 in Suzhou. Read more

Monday morning. The three-day Ireland workshop has come to an end. We had a small but diverse group of people this year with backgrounds in Wu Style and other Chen Styles. People came from Belgium and other parts of Ireland. The workshop was held in Celbridge, near Dublin.

Ireland Workshop 2010 i

Busy last few days. Getting used to the goat smell  in the coffee. Still cannot figure out whether it is in the water or in the cream. Workshop is going well. We spent more time on push hands this year. Yesterday’s schedule was light but ended up quite a heavy one. Corrected Hans on his Yilu. He had learned it by himself before the workshop. Remarkable job completing the Yilu on his own through DVD! Except of few directional changes, most of his moves are all in place! Hans is from Belgium. Read more

Planned everything well for this European trip but ended up putting the power adapters in the luggage. Now I am sitting in the London Heathrow Airport with a 5 hr layover, without any power. There is enough battery power to write a few notes. Read more
Master Chen,
So I have been practicing the loose step a lot…basically the receiving end is the opposite of the issuing end of the body, if receiving left side then right side is issuing, and of course these are interchangeable. Read more

Arrived on time in Ottawa. Almost 30 degrees! James Chan and Steve Chan came to the airport in their T-Shirts! It’s nice to be warm!

Stopped by for fast food on the way to Gilles-Vallant Taichi Center.

3:00 pm private with Pierre.

4:00 pm private with Daniel.

Supper with James, Daniel and Steve.

7:00-10:00 pm Qigong and push hands at Gilles-Vallant Taichi Center. Lots of pushhands exercises.

It was after 10:30 when we got home to Jame’s place. A bit snack and push hands explanations.

1:00 am now but it actually is only 11:00 pm for me. Good day today but tomorrow I will probably be tired from lack of sleep.

Learning Tai Chi has been a process of wonder and occasional pain. My acupuncturist, Dr. Steven Aung, said that we are where we should be, even if the arrival at this point seems bewildering or difficult. Read more

There have been countless works published on the species of martial art, their variety of incarnations and attitudes. It seems pointless to tear a single page from the encyclopaedia of combatives in order to repeat what a hundred authors have repeated before. Often, a lesson hard-learned in life is that what is not the highest question, but rather, why. Why, then, study the martial arts, taijiquan specifically? Read more
