Fist Drape Over Body
  • Kua needs to turn over (tippie toe if needed to get maximum range of the kua turning over)
  • Right hand-elbow-shoulder triangle must remain unchanged. This triangle plane must catch the opponent, like how an oar catches water one way but not the other.
  • The right elbow going up is not just lifting the elbow. It is stretching the torso so much that it flips up the elbow. Shoulder must stay downwards.
  • The right kua turns over as the right hand-elbow-shoulder triangle changes position.
  • Left kua must open, and don’t let the left knee point to the ground. This is very difficult to do, so the instructor is likely not able to show this one.
  • Central axis does not move.
  • At the very last part of the movement, there is a stretch between the right elbow and the left elbow to catch the opponent, and then we rotate on the central axis, and this rotation being inside must be bigger than the outside movement to have power.  This is an example of fajin when done quickly.

Back to the kua-to-hand exercise.

  1. Lock the hand, shoulder and kua as a triangle, which is a fixed plane.
  2. We fixed a dot on the plane, and we rotate on the dot without changing the plane itself.
  3. We put this dot just under the elbow.
  4. Kua becomes (就是) the hand. When the opponent touches our hand, it is the same as touching our kua. Ultimately, the opponent is touching the floor.
This plane is something that we maintain during push hands. When we have it, we can move this plane however we want.  The plane itself is double heavy, but if we can make it a revolving door, it is not double heavy anymore. The axis can be put anywhere on the plane or through the plane (a dot on the plane).
Fist of Lifting and Blocking
  1. Elbow does not move.
  2. Rotate the shoulder to cause the fist to change the direction.

First 13 moves of the 24-form.
This demonstration focused on showing the internal movement of the form. Breathing is heavy to demonstrate how it works with body movements.
Overall, this is not how a person trains. It is an exaggerated demonstration.

In Practical Method, horizontal moves must be seen. Feeling and thinking you have horizontal size is not enough. It must be real!

Verical moves, however, are the opposite. By nature, vertical moves don’t create horizontal size and therefore no visible to the human eye. Whenever vertical moves are seen, it indicates there is horizontal movement involved and therefore it is an error.

In both cases, a point of reference with a physical object is the best way.

Instructors Brian Chung and Ling Zili performed Chen Style Taijiquan Practical Method (Foundations, Yilu, Erlu and Push Hands) during the World Taiji Day at the University of Sydney in Australia on Saturday 24 April 2021.

There were over 200 people at this event organised by the Tai Chi Association of Australia which was an excellent turnout as was held during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In attendance were disciples Janet Ho, Ling Zili, John Saw, Brian Chung, John Ho and Paul Pryce.

Turning Flower over from the Sea Bottom

Today, there is a big breakthrough.
The shoulders finally find the kuas in this movement. It was very possibly due to the exercise taught on Mar 30, 2021:

  • Use the kua to push the hand out. Shoulder, kua and elbow are one piece. The hand stretches against the shoulder. This is a very practical push hand move.

REMEMBER THE PROCEDURE that gets me here, but DON’T FOLLOW THE FEELING.

Train the scissors as an ability/skill. Two way split, in both elbow and armpit, 2 dots. In use or push hands, it is paper cut model, with one side being fixed, like an opponent holding you and you cannot move. Like the crab pincers.

Train the elbow. Thread through the needle, push into pull. Pass the demarcation line/dot. We always move after going through the hole. Before that, it is a push. Elbow has to pass the line, go over.

Fist of Lifting and Blocking 搬拦肘

  1. Lock the two elbows as if they are on a table
  2. The two fists only go up to go around. They also have to stretch against the two elbows. Imagine that you have a wall parallel to the chest right in front.
Generally,
  1. The kuas control the rotation on the central vertical axis.
  2. The knees control the height of the body/torso.
  3. The elbow control the horizontal movement.

Kelvin corrected me on #42 to #44

#42 Embrace Head to Push Mountain

Starting position: chest facing N; hand facing W; half-horse stance R foot rear, L foot front.

  1. L hand elbow in, palm up, come around to R side, past R shoulder.
  2. R hand, palm down, at L armpit.
  3. Hinging on R elbow, swing R hand palm down diagonally towards NE.
  4. Adjust stance slightly, by moving heels, so that L foot becomes rear and R foot front.
  5. Foot in Hand out – bring R foot in and push R hand further out by straightening elbow, in scissors-like action.
  6. Negative Circle both hands.
  7. Hands “holding up” head, above shoulders, on either side of the head.
  8. Push both hands down on R side, similar to Six Sealing Four Closing; at the same time take a big step to the R, but unlike Six Sealing Four Closing, L foot stays put.

#43 Change Palm Three Times

  1. Imagine a long narrow tube slanting down between your 2 hands. Stretch out L hand, palm inside tube, palm facing left.
  2. Stretch out R hand inside tube, palm down, while at the same time withdraw L elbow having L hand palm up.
  3. Arms wrap around in straight line front of abdomen, R arm inside, L arm outside.

#44 Oblique Single Whip

  1. R hand comes out from under L elbow, forming bird beak, going all the way to the right, shoulder level, similar to Single Whip.
  2. Shift weight to R foot. Take a small step to bring L foot closer to R foot, then take a big diagonal step to land L foot so that chest faces NE.
  3. Extend L hand all the way to the left, shoulder level, similar to Single Whip.

Position check: chest faces NE; 2 feet on NW line; half-horse stance.
