CHI ELEGANCE
Chen’s Zoom classes. On Feb. 24th
that moment was when he said that our tai chi should be “elegant.” The class started at 6:30 in the morning,
about two hours earlier than I usually get up.
I was not feeling elegant.
look that way. The most obvious thing
was that I was always looking down to check on my movements. When I look down I
lean forward, which makes me wobble and toss.
I have to get good enough that I
can trust my body to do its job without my checking on it all the time. I think learning tai chi is much like
learning how to drive—when you first start you look down at the steering wheel
and the pedals. You quickly learn how to
operate them and then lift your gaze to look out the windshield to see where
you want to go and how to get there. You
don’t have to look down at your hands on the wheel and your feet on the pedals
anymore. You trust your body to do what you’ve trained it to do.
about lunch or the rest of my day, not watching myself in the mirror or listening
to music. This is not the time to be
multitasking and yet that is what my mind insists on doing. Somehow I have to be alert and not distracted
by anything. Focusing on the imaginary
opponent in front of me helps.
on each individual movement to make sure all the tai chi principles are in
them. Perhaps someday I’ll be able to
stand tall and look ahead without having to chaperone my body, but I’m not
there yet.

One circle is the foundation. Two circles interacting is the beginning of function. This is seen on the surface as a figure 8 type of movement. It is in fact the first set of gears.
Master Chen Zhonghua explains where the 8 figure actions are on the body, as well as how to do it.
There are lots of explanations and key points in this video.

Based on Master Chen's online class this week, we focussed on training the "kua going over" exercise. We explained the need to lock the two ends (front knee and rear kuas), and move the middle (front kua). We integrated it into Fist Drape Over Body in Yilu.

Hardness to the extreme is softness. Once it reaches the end, cannot be any harder, but soft.
This softness is actually very hard, fine and smooth, such as polished jade, polished stone, stainless steel surface, glass screen of mobile phone, etc.
From these examples, it can be seen that the softness of Taiji is not true softness, but an appearance of softness on the outside, it is actually hard and rigid. Read more

Taijiquan has the saying that “yin and yang are mutually rooted”.
Wang Zongyue said, “Yin does not depart from yang, yang does not depart from yin. Yin and yang benefit mutually and this is the comprehension of energy”.
Zhou Dunyi of the Song Dynasty said in Taiji Illustration, “Wuji then taiji. Taiji moves and produces yang. Move to the extreme generates stillness, stillness produces yin, and stillness to the extreme generates moves again. Movement and stillness are the roots of each other. Once yin and yang are split, then there are two elementary parts.” Read more

I am using this video clip to introduce the Chinese concept of "If the opponent does not move, I don't move. If he is about to move, I move after him but arrive before him. "
This has also been rendered as "If the opponent does not move, I don't move. If he is about to move, I move before him. "
Please watch as discuss what you see and what you think in relation to Practical Method moves.
