We normally change direction by moving the outside such as hand, head and knee. In Practical Method, we change direction by moving the inside such as elbow and kua.

In Practical Method one of the rules of movement is the lock the two ends and only move the middle. In this clip, Master Chen uses the Kua folding to demonstrate/practice this rule. Imaging the knee and the shoulder(on the same side) are on a track/line. The Kua is outside of this line. By pushing the Kua into this line, the shoulder and knee are force to open in distance. This is an important exercise of the internal movements of Chen Style Taijiquan Practical Method.

In Practical Method we open the Kua. Open here means to make able to rotate. In this clip, Master Chen Zhonghua teaches a method to achieve this. Restrict the Kua movements horizontally. Like putting a ball in a square box that fits just right. The ball cannot move sideways, or backward and forward. This restriction causes the Kua movements to only rotate. And the result of this rotation will cause the movement to create an energy that travels down the leg to the heal.

Lock the two ends and move the middle. Use the kua as the middle. The leg as one and the rest as the other. The opening (movement) of the Kua opens the two body parts. This is a training video clip.

The upper and lower body is demarcated by the waist. The they must be solid parts like boards before we can practice separation. Master Chen Zhonghua shows how in this video.

Master Chen Zhonghua’s choice of language is straight forward and literal. However, I find myself like many others having a difficult time understanding his instructions at the beginning of the Practical Method journey. It’s not that I didn’t want to follow the instructions. Whatever I did just seemed not matching what he meant. Instructions such as putting the left hand in front of the right hand gave me a hard time. The reason was that what I thought was front was not the same as what Master Chen intended front to be. Let’s say setting up the hand positions is the first step, and other things are built on top of it. If this step was not done correctly, everything else would also be wrong. Therefore, it was utmost important to get the first step correctly.
In push hands, the first thing we need to do is to have peng energy. What does this mean? It requires us to be able to lock the opponent on the touch, confront him, without showing any disadvantages. We mustn’t show any weakness at the first place. Only like this, we will have the confidence to win.
What is confidence? Confidence is real gong fu. Without it, there is no use if you just feel good about yourself. How to gain real gong fu? Of course it is through years of training. Read more

The number one Practical Method concept is Yin Yang Separation. In this video, Master Chen Zhonghua demonstrates, explains and answers questions on this concept using the upper and lower body separation as a model. The upper and lower body are demarcated by the waist. The separation of the two is likened as the twisting open of a bottle and cap.

The inside of the elbow is a joint that is indented. The opposite case is the ball of the elboow. It protrudes. In Practical Method, an indented joint must be opened and the particular action of pushing the indented inner corner of the elbow out is called Kai Zhou (Open the Elbow).
This action makes the bicep and the forearm to stretch outward proportionally. This is one of the root action of all Practical Method moves.

In this lesson, Master Chen Zhonghua teaches how to separate the body into two parts: the arm and the rest of the body.
The demarcation point is the inside dot of the armpit. After the separation, the whole arm has to form a structure and will lock into that structure without any changes during movements. The rest of the body is another structure and will do the same.
In other words, the body is divided into two segments for this drill.
