For students who have done a thousand yilu and want to go more into push hand, it is a good idea to pick up weapon form. Steve also practices with a heavy Guan Dao. Master Chen wrote “My experience is that students become much more coordinated when they get a chance to work with something in their hands.

Hello everyone,

after the birth of my son I like to begin slowly to practise again. But the midwife said, that I have to avoid any type of sport for the next 6 – 8 weeks. Any force which affect the pelvic floor should be avoided (lifting thinks for instance). But I think, that doing the yilu hasn`t any affection on the pelvic floor at all. But being not sure, I like to have your estimation.

Thanks a lot

Sarah

Levi and Jeff come all the way from Iowa, Thanks to Gene for driving with them from Seattle.

Master Chen talked about warping as the basis of creating power from unmoving structure. I heard this several times before, only now starting to feel it in my body.

1. Look: Use your eyes to observe and remember.

  1. Do not move your body. Do not copy. If you copy at this stage, your brain will link what you see to what you can copy. This may give a false impression that you’ve understood the movement. This is how bad habits are formed.
  2. Just focus on whether you’ve seen clearly. You can see it repeatedly. You can change your angle and point of observation.
  3. Do not analyse. Do not judge the quality of the movement. At this stage, right or wrong, it doesn’t matter. Read more

To Follow i

by webmaster2 on 2013/02/21

One part of the body always likes to follow the direction of movements of other parts of the body. This will cause tossing and collapsing. If you observe people practice Taijiquan, you will notice that this is a very prevalent problem.

When one’s own body parts follow each other, there will be no possibility for rotation in the body.

The cloud-like moves usually are the result of the mistake. It is something to be circumvented, not something to be desired.

Hong Junsheng Taijiquan Philosophy – As I See it

By Zhang Yanhai 张延海 (Translated from http://chenzhonghua.cn)

Mr. Hong Junsheng (1907-1996) of Yu County, Henan Province was an indoor Taijiquan disciple of Mr. Chen Fake for 15 years and as the result has received true transmission of the art. After many years of inheriting the tradition and developing it, Mr. Hong has brought the essence of Taijiquan to a scientific and philosophical level and provided a systematic analysis of the inherent laws of Taijiquan; and at the same time able to demonstrate them visually in front of everyone. He is the first to propose the use of the mechanical concept of “neutral equilibrium” in Taiji. He has his own unique perspective on “rotation” and “silk reeling”.

This exercise has nothing to do with the demonstration by some masters being pushed by a line of people, mostly more than ten, to demonstrate how strong and rooted they are. This is an exercise Master Chen Zhonghua used at a workshop in Victoria, B.C. Canada in 2006 to train the pusher to get used to the experience of pushing into something very strong but is human. An exercise before this one is to push the wall, which provides static resistance. The pusher has to deal with: Read more

To start off I thank Master Chen for inviting me to write this an article comparing juggling and Taiji.

I am both a juggler and a taijiquan practitioner.  This doesn’t mean that I am good at either of these activities, rather that I persist in doing them.  I have noticed several common points between juggling and taiji, though even in they differ even in these commonalities. Read More
