I’m curious as to what is ‘canting food’ exactly.

I think is Canteen Food.

‘canting’, is ‘restaurant’ in chinese. Normally western students pay more because this is where we eat, instead of preparing own food

In Package 1, you stay in a private or shared room, your meals are prepared for you and served to you in the restaurant. In Package 2, you share a dorm room with 6 or 7 other people. Your meals are prepared, but you serve yourself.
