MrApril14 - 12Carmelo and Eric from Sacramento joined us this workshop. The theme of this workshop is when student follow Master Chen instruction, they will get stuck, and we have to learn to be comfortable getting in this position.

We did a new stepping exercise to bear out power from the waist to the arm, I find this exercise hard to get the alignment right, especially when trying it out with resistance

A viewer on Youtube ask this question

Is he really saying you should keep your body static like that while moving your arms and legs independently of it? That doesn’t seem to be in line with taiji principles, nor does it appear to be what is going on when he’s actually pushing someone

This is the video where the question is from,   1. The human body and machine. 2. Shoulder-torso separation. 3. Upper and lower body separation

How would you answer his comment?

On Sunday, Master Chen demonstrated how to set up multiple lines on an opponent’s body when pushing hands. The goal was to set up enough lines that the opponent finally felt like they had to jump out to escape, or they were bounced, or squeezed out. Read more

Hi everybody,
This weekend I’ll hold another workshop “Introduction to Practical Method” at the university in Berlin. Still some capacities left. Nice price because sponsored by the university.

Details on my page ... here.

1512664_10201009209902940_483936788_nBlake from Seattle, and KS from Malaysia came to the workshop. Master Chen went over the Yin Yang relation in the legs, where one leg has to be still which sound simple but I find it hard to keep the front leg to not move. (Photos by Jay Smith) Read more

This is Chen Xu’s first competition outside China. Also Lawrence’s first competition in Singapore.

On Yin Yang Separation:
Whenever you can separate Yin and Yang, one part doesn’t move, the other part moves, there has to be a relationship between them.
The relationship (between Yin and Yang) is the number one factor of Taiji. As the matter of fact, it (the relationship) is the core of Taiji. Read more

fleming-wilkin Practiced with Fleming on Sunday. he started 6 months ago uses his upper body too much. I told him to do more moving foundation to get the feel of generating power from the leg. His legs are weaker proportionally, so this is something he has to work on, to even out his body power potential.

Generating power from the leg is an elusive feeling, especially when pushing another person. My light bulb moment happen when pushing the big fridge and realizing the mistakes I was doing

Just arrived last night. Ready for the workshop today. Here are some photos taken this morning:

Tai Chi skills are acquired accumulatively (through hard working). If you don’t have a solid foundation, it’s hard for you to advance. Even if you can do foundations very well, you still have to be able to implement them into yilu practice. Push hand skills/abilities are rooted in yilu. Master Chen has presented us an overwhelming amount of knowledge. What we need to do is to digest and piece together his teaching into our own unified body of knowledge. One skill leads to another skill. Through practice, we are getting better. The criteria of “better” is not how “fine” you can do an specific form. It is how many skills you can relate and execute at one point. To learn is to synthesize.

Before I came to US in 1992, I only heard about Master Hong Junsheng’s Chen Style Taiji Quan Practical Method. In 1998, I met Master Chen Zhonghua in Phoenix at a martial art competition Read more

Power transmission 2

My question is assuming that the kua(s) are opened does that result in neutral equalibrium because the center of gravity is neither raised or lowered, basically by allowing those to be at the same level at the same time then potential energy, rotation, and reveloution are possible because if something with neutral equilibrium moves those around with follow, and then using joint rotation, you are using angular velocity which then turns into linear velocity, almost like a series of rotations(angular velocity occur) starting from the bottom up then transmitted to linear velocity, therefore if you have these continous angular velocity it is like a wheel continuously spinning around the axis while taiji has numerous axis points that are rotating.

I had a great time at this year’s Edmonton 7 day seminar even though I was only able to attend for two days.  We started out the mornings working through a lot of foundations, which I don’t drill as often as I should.  Every time I come to Edmonton I learn a lot of helpful drills that really help work out the details in parts of the form. After came back from DaQingShan, I resumed Practical Method Foundation classes every Wednesday for one hour. In one of the classes recently, when we were practicing “twisting the towel”, I saw one student’s elbows were away from his body. In that position, his elbows are out.  In order to let him understand what is “in”, what is “out”, I used a short stick to demonstrate for him. I let myself ready in the “twisting the towel” position, put one end of the stick against my rib and rest my middle finger on the stick. Then I showed him clearly when the elbow is out and when the elbow is in. To my surprise, I realized my elbows have never been truly “IN” before.
