Full Time Courses : Full Time Blog

I had to curtail my Xiamen trip because I got a slight case of sun stroke.  The culprit was that those were the hottest days; and that in typical Chinese fashion, the electricity department decided to shut down the power in the middle of the nights for some sort of repair; the neighbours were too loud to catch up on some sleep during the day (it was still too hot anyway); and that we had too many passengers for an 9 hour ride.

This gave me the chance to visit Dr. Choi here in Taipo.  I have passed by Dr. Choi’s clinic many times, Read more

Stay tuned for videos.

At lunch Master Chen compared learning Taiji to boiling water: The requirement for boiling water is 100 degrees, even if the water is 99 degrees it is still not boiling.  From one perspective the water might as well still be cold because it is still not boiling; 99 degrees might as well be 1 degree.  In reality 99 degrees is only 1 degree away from boiling while 1 degree is still 99 degrees away from boiling. Master Chen said there are many things he can’t do which would give the impression that he is not very flexible.  But, he insists, his joints are round and smooth which means he can maneuver them freely.  Maneuverability is favored over looseness.  If you are not stiff, you have no power.  If your joints are not round you have no maneuverability.

Yilu note i

by Khamserk on 2010/06/30

I have started to be more conscious of remaining totally upright during Yilu.  At the fulltime session we do far more Yilu per day than I would normally do at home and I get quite tired.  I’ve noticed that as I become more tired I find my self looking at the ground as a result of slouching.  When I am bent over like this my mass leans in the direction of movement and stepping begins to have a lunging quality to it. No Movement 2 i

by Khamserk on 2010/06/29

At another level, when the hand goes in and out on a line it is considered no movement.  If the line does not go sideways the opponent cannot detect action.

Students started to feel pain and ache. My right knee was in slight pain yesterday, but it was better this morning. I think I was twisting it too much. I will maintain higher posture and be conscious of it till it gets stronger.

I am learning a lot the past week, and had done more yilus in a week here than in five months since I started.

Visitors to us today came from Wulian He Style Taijiquan, Wulian Chen Style Taijiquan and Yiyuan Hunyuan Taiji quan. Steven Chan took the challenges and represented the Daqingshan Center well.

When we learn the form we must copy what we see.  This is not wrong.  Form means to get from here to there.  What’s wrong is how we get there, the way we do it.  The form must look the same but the action must be exactly the opposite of what you would come up with on your own.

Taking Up Space 1

by Khamserk on 2010/06/23

Neutralizing is taking up the space before your opponent can and adding slightly more.  I’m not sure, but maybe is the same as when Master says that there is one line with two sides to it: you follow the opponents line back and then step in on the same line.

Words by Master Chen Zhonghua

… Never together. Every part of your body must be broken up. And they work together as a unit of work. Not as one piece. (like a machine with gears)  You work all together but with many pieces.

… If you push. It becomes a conflict. Then it becomes who’s power is stronger. Read more

Find weight on feet

Find the stretch or manufacture it with both hand then cut the stretch toward o back with waist turn. Or scissor push o back against front thigh

O put hand on your shoulder redirect to o line back to his shoulder. Same with o hand on arm

Matching power. Have to feel o power first otherwise can’t match it

Kua rotation exercise on chair. Keep butt steady then do the shun ni rotations on kua by pushing on feet.

Yilu double heavy. When stepping make sure it is clear transfer of weight.

i’ve noticed i’m writing a lot fewer notes this year compared to last, as i’ve heard many of the principles and ideas before. doesn’t mean i can reproduce them in my body yet.

Thoughts on Taiji i

by Nikolai on 2010/06/21

Here just two quotes from Master Chen on  Taiji one can meditate on :

1. Taiji is the mastery of time

2. You fight until you loose – otherwise you won’t feel the energy

As I had booked my flights early, my final destination, after a short stop over in Shanghai, was Qingdao. The other people of the group enjoyed a few days in Beijing.  Master Chen organised the train ride from Qingdao to Wulian for me, and one of his friends (who works in one of the export companies in Qingdao) picked me up from my hotel and made sure I was on the right train, right carriage, right seat. Unfortunately, it was foggy that morning so I didn’t get to see much of Qingdao.  The train ride was about 2 hours, and gave me a good view of the landscape outside of the city.  Once we left the suburban areas behind, the country side was no different from the flat lands you find in the Canterbury area in New Zealand or the agricultural areas of Holland. The seven full time students start with foundations, then Master Chen join us and start a yilu form. He started slow and loose and toward the end he cranked it up, really powerful, fast movement. I think this is how he practice privately, I never see this power in his videos. Read more

Movement cannot hold force. If there is force anywhere then you cannot open.

Power is not generated in the arms by pushing with arms, power comes from the legs and is transfered to the hand by activating the hips. Push the foot into the ground, like you are trying to stand, but don’t stand up. Instead rotate your hips so you can stretch your leg, body, arm and hand.
