Master Chen Zhonghua’s choice of language is straight forward and literal. However, I find myself like many others having a difficult time understanding his instructions at the beginning of the Practical Method journey. It’s not that I didn’t want to follow the instructions. Whatever I did just seemed not matching what he meant. Instructions such as putting the left hand in front of the right hand gave me a hard time. The reason was that what I thought was front was not the same as what Master Chen intended front to be. Let’s say setting up the hand positions is the first step, and other things are built on top of it. If this step was not done correctly, everything else would also be wrong. Therefore, it was utmost important to get the first step correctly.
In push hands, the first thing we need to do is to have peng energy. What does this mean? It requires us to be able to lock the opponent on the touch, confront him, without showing any disadvantages. We mustn’t show any weakness at the first place. Only like this, we will have the confidence to win.
What is confidence? Confidence is real gong fu. Without it, there is no use if you just feel good about yourself. How to gain real gong fu? Of course it is through years of training. Read more

The number one Practical Method concept is Yin Yang Separation. The inside of the elbow is a joint that is indented. The opposite case is the ball of the elboow. It protrudes. In Practical Method, an indented joint must be opened and the particular action of pushing the indented inner corner of the elbow out is called Kai Zhou (Open the Elbow).
This action makes the bicep and the forearm to stretch outward proportionally. This is one of the root action of all Practical Method moves.

In this lesson, Master Chen Zhonghua teaches how to separate the body into two parts: the arm and the rest of the body.
The demarcation point is the inside dot of the armpit. After the separation, the whole arm has to form a structure and will lock into that structure without any changes during movements. The rest of the body is another structure and will do the same.
In other words, the body is divided into two segments for this drill.

Height restriction is good. Kua went over the vertical line. Very good. Hand and Shoulder are locked in position with the help of the bar. Good. Suggestions: Make sure that the upper body is locked into one piece. Stronger. Make sure that the lower body is also locked into one piece.

Basic movement and structure are correct. Your movement comes from your shoulder. You should initiate movement and power from inside the Kua and push outwards to the shoulders and knees.

Very well done. You did a more synthesized version. We were doing a more simple forward folding exercise. Your version including a rotation of the torso, which is not what we were practicing, but it is not wrong.
