André Yilu Dec.28 2014 i

by Andre on 2014/12/28

A recent Yilu in the park here in Brasil, it was as hot as it gets.
I was out by the third Yilu frankly. 😛
The angle\footage isn’t great either and I slipped at times in the grass. 😀
But it gives an idea.
Feel free to make any level of comment, and thanks for watching.

To celebrate the New Year, we are going to gather and practice Yilu and Cannon Fist at North Mountain Park (7th Street and Peoria Ave.) from 8am to 10am on January 1, 2015. Everyone is welcome. Brunch at Ping’s place afterwards. RSVP to Ping (602-373-3457) by December 31.

Houston, TX 3

by Clevenger on 2014/12/13

If anyone is interested in training together I moved to Houston Texas earlier this year.

I am a student of Master Chen and have had the privilege of training with him throughout the U.S. and once in Canada. Most of my training has been with Levi Sowers, John Upshaw, Erwin Ramthun, and Tim Duehring in the Upper Midwest group, and I have attended workshops in New York/New Jersey, Phoenix, Milwaukee, and Maple Ridge.

Please contact me at ThirdCoastTaiji@pm.me and we can find a time that works for both of us.

Ronnie applicationOn another Fall Ottawa weekend, Rachel, James and Daniel of the Ottawa Practical Methods Group organized an intensive training seminar with Ronnie Yee, one of Master Joseph Chen’s Senior Disciples. For two days, students of the Practical Method in the Ottawa Region as well as Hugo from the Toronto group, enjoyed the stories and instructions from Ronnie.

TShapedYinYang-trailer-fullOne of the lessons Master Chen elaborated on at the recent New York workshop was the principle in taiji of training from ‘ Square to Round ‘. This is an abbreviation that describes the difference in the body ( and the resulting changes ) that are the result of training the foundational method of Yilu vs. Cannon Fist , which is the implementation of foundation , applied in martial technique.

The more full expression of ‘ square to round ‘ , that was discussed in the workshop, was that, in the Yilu, ” …..the inside is ‘ square ‘ and the outside is ‘ round ‘….. “, meaning the inside linear movements apprear as a circular move on the outside, and that in Erlu ( cannon fist ) , ” …..the inside is ‘ round ‘, and the outside is ‘ square ‘…..”, meaning the rotation of the inner core, is circular, but the outside of the body must have the ability to fold or ‘wrap’ around corners ( square ).

Although this is really a very big subject requiring a lot of explanation, the following video helps to put these expressions into perspective.

So I got this cool professional camera from Master Chen and I recorded a lot of clips. Still need to sort most of them out but here’s one video I compiled from it.

We took a tour around DQS. The 8 immortal caves as well as some other attractions. It was a nice afternoon and we had together. Lilia, John, Paul, Eric and me. I think I’m not in this video though. Typical photographer problem indeed.

Perseverance 6

by Pawel Mueller on 2014/09/14

Back in Vienna and now also with a fix 40h job I can’t practice that much. But, as Master Chen often says, Taiji practice is more  about perseverance. So I do in fact practice all the time. On the subway, while sitting and an Yilu or Jibengong here and there when waiting on the train.

At first I was worried, that this is not enough. Sure, I won’t be having huge breakthroughs that fast, but I have some from time to time and that’s good. Instead of waiting for some time off where I can practice I practice all the time a little bit. That sums up. I recorded this Video at the end of my first 3 months visit to DQS and I see a lot of improvement already.

What I want to say with this? Do small things all the time. It’s worth it and it’s better than doing nothing after all. (People on the Train might look strange at you, though)

happy training

cheers

Three weeks ago we did arrive on Daqingshan with our little boy. We’re going to stay for 6 weeks, so now’s half time. So far we can say everything worked out very good, the Chinese are all pretty crazy about little Lukas, which very often give us a little more freedom to train – and that’s what we actually came for. So far with quite success. Read more

Broadsword Form 5

by alex renwick on 2014/04/28

Here is a version of the Broadsword Form that I performed at World Tai Chi Day 2014 in Houston.  I’m posting it because I didn’t find many examples on line when I was looking  for help.  My own criticism is that my stance isn’t low enough or wide enough.  One point I was working on was to have each move coming in, toward the body, or going out, away from the body, and to have smooth transitions between the two where appropriate.  I would welcome what ever comment anyone might have.

Edit: You may notice that I left out one cut at the end. I was busy thinking about what I would need to do to move back to my starting position and forgot it. You can see it both in Carl Lindberg’s version and Steve Chan’s.

Here is a pretty good example of the power of yin yang separation. Because there is a lot of power involved you can see (and feel) the difference very clearly. The video is of me operating a backhoe briefly. First I operate the backhoe arm without stabilizing the machine. The tractor tosses wildly and much of the power of the arm is lost. This is called energy being “dispersed”. Then I stabilize the machine and operate the arm. The power is greatly increased. This is called energy being “clear” and or “pure”. The difference in power extremely easy to feel, and I think is quite visually apparent. It is the direct result of the machine “not moving” while the arm is operated and moves freely (yin yang separation)
