You have probably heard the idea that one should put an egg in the armpit during taiji training. This concept points students of Taiji to the right direction but not correct position or method.
In fact, this concept should be expressed as Kai Ye, open the armpit. Kai Ye is a conceptual term that directs the student to move in two ways. One is to separate the arm and the torson with the opening of the armpit so that two lines of energy is created.
The other is that the bicep and the torso (top of the ribcage) should squeeze together but grind against each other to cause separate in opposite directions.
