Taiji is the art of three. This means yin and yang with a non-moving pivot. Unfortunately our body is made as a system of two (two eyes, ears, arms, legs, etc. ).
Therefore to create the 3rd piece is the key.
In this Sept. 15, 2021 online video clip, Master Chen Zhonghua explains and demonstrate how to create the magic 3 with our human body!

Understanding goals, principles, guidelines, restrictions, and methods are important for both learning and practicing Taijiquan properly. In this video, Master Chen Zhonghua points out that one of the main obstacles to overcome in Taijiquan is the problem of work requiring three hands but having only two. He clarifies the issues and, in the end, provides a method on how to resolve the problem.
Is the word “ratchet” an accurate description of this process?
Mpadilla, excellent! Yes, I would say that it is accurate. When using a ratchet wrench the steps are: (i) turn the ratchet to rotate a fastener (bolt) until blocked, (ii) without having to remove the wrench from the bolt, simply turn the ratchet to an unblocked position, and (iii) turn the ratchet again to rotate the bolt until blocked. And, repeat until bolt is completely tightened or loosened.
The similarity lies in the task of (ii), when blocked, how to move or change to an unblocked position without losing the connection between the two at their contact points (i.e., linked but not fused).
