Recently, I notice when I rotate the rear kua in a certain way to bring the knee up, a stick seems to be created between the rear kua and the rear ankle. Note that the leg itself is actually not straight, it really is just like the half horse stance with the rear side longer than the front side. It feels like this stick can support me with the proper alignment against an incoming force.

Today, I pushed hands with a few people. I realized how afraid I was of falling. I knew that I needed to get closer, and was trying to do kua-to-kua. However, every time the opponent tried to come in, I knew the kind of move he was trying to execute, and I would get caught and fell if he successfully got into position.

“Nobody has the patience to wait and spin. If I am reacting and someone is pushing, and I wait until he has enough friction, I spin and it works. But if I’m too impatient, he pushes and I move forward or backward instead of spin; it becomes a toss, because I go too early. That’s why you have to be patient, and you have to follow the rules. Following the rules is very difficult because when we see an opportunity we want to fight. And in taiji, the rules say you can’t. Even if he’s not blocking […] you have to wait until he comes in and then you can spin him.”
