Pan Bu (Twist Step) Lecture Notes

Today’s online class was very significant to me in my Practical Method training. Master Chen taught on the Pan Bu, Twist Step, breaking down the lesson in clear segmented manner. This lesson struck home so much I trained it for 2 hours afterwards them taught it in three consecutive lessons as a means of making progress on this one move that is throughout the yilu.

Master Chen first taught about upper body and lower body separation. He defined the area of the waist or torso as the kua line up to the armpits. He took a square sheet piece of wood the size of his torso and attached it to his body to show it as one piece. When doing the twist step or any related movement, this torso area is “dead” it is inactive and is powered or moved by the lower body. This is now a good time to discuss the action of the lower body.

As the torso sits on top of the lower body, the kua aims diagonally down along the line, or seemed to me, the inguinal crease. This cause the kua to drop and thus rotating the waist in that direction. This must be done in a manner as if you are in a tube from the shoulders down otherwise you will toss. A way of making this occur is creating the central vertical line, which Master Chen added very significant information.

The central vertical line (CVL) is between the bai hui and hui yin points. Act as if there is a low ceiling that touches the of your head, the bai hui point. As you push up from your feet into the the imaginary ceiling a line created between these 2 points. This line is called “ting” and can exist between 2 points in the body that are appropriately aligned. The are pushed against each other and stretched away from one another. This ting must be present when creating the line. So, when the kua goes down, the waist stays within the proximity of the tube as the vertical line provides a hinge for it to rotate on.

This really provided me clear instruction on using the lower body, kuas, to power twisting moves. Master Chen demonstrates and pointed out differences between moves are lead by the upper body as compared to the lower body. He also demonstrated the significant power and size differences that are created when executing this move properly. He showed places in the yilu where it occurs, such as Xié xíng ǎo bù, Walk obliquely in twist steps.
