Video Pt1 – James Strider – Private Session – Jose Lobato – Perth Dec 2019
On the 4th of December I had the privilege of meeting up with Jose Lobato from East Timor whom I had met just recently at the Bali workshop. We had a great time, despite the unexpected Marsh Flies and various bugs trying to eat us!
Due to his work, Jose is in Perth every month and we found time to meet up in beautiful King’s Park for a 2hr session before 2019 comes to an end, covering the Basicand .
From this I have made a series of 6 reference videos which I thought may be of interest…
These videos and more will be available at www.practicalmethod.com.au.
If you want to learn from more in depth materials, please look into the incredible database of Master Chen’s online videos here at www.practicalmethod.com.
As always, feedback is welcome…enjoy!

James Strider – Fulltime Training Blog Wk5 2019
On the 24th January, just 3 days after arriving back from Perth, Australia, I got the call from Master Chen to hurry on up to Beijing and meet Massimo Giorgianni, our representative in France for the Practical Method, at Beijing airport where he was arriving the next day for his first visit to China and my first Fulltime guest for 2019!

PRACTICAL METHOD IS AN INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY!
As part of my new role as the International Liaison Officer for Master Chen here in China, I’ve already had the pleasure of meeting and greeting Massimo Giorgianni from Toulouse as he arrived in Beijing for an 8 day stay in Rizhao, Read more

“You are all so clever, you’re stupid!”
These words, uttered by Master Chen (with his usual impish grin and mischievous glint in his eyes!) at his premier European workshop way back in 2006 when he came to Holland, have since been heard by many others around the globe. As the room was full of grown Dutch men in this instance, a nation that prides itself on being pragmatic, logical and individualistic, they did not go down well! Read more
81With Full Movement Names – International Coach & Liaison Officer James Strider, Perth December 2018
Over the past 12 years of training under Master Chen, I can safely say that his emphasis on how to train correctly to obtain true “ability” (ie. being able to demonstrate effective martial/physical application of the movement(s) in question) through the Practical Method are a combination of Consistency, strict Adherence to the Rules of “Not Moving” (or Rotation) and, last but not least, getting used to “Eating Bitter” (or as Master Chen would say “You must become comfortable in your uncomfortableness!”) every day.

Having been living in Rizhao for the past 7 of the 9 months since leaving Perth, it’s high time I started my blog again!
The 6th Daqingshan International Competition
Daqingshan Mountain from the Pagoda
The start of my stay in China coincided with the 6th International Daqingshan Competition (April 28th to 30th this year), a yearly gathering that Master Chen started to promote both Taijiquan forms (a series of choreographed movements particular to each Family style) and also to provide a stage for a largePush Hands (a means of practicing Taiji techniques whilst trying to unbalance your opponent) tournament.
My name is James Strider and since meeting Master Chen in Holland way back in 2006 I have been pretty much obsessed with the Practical Method. Having started my journey with Chinese Martial Arts, in this case classical WuShu, in 1987 at the age of 14, I was envious of the few students who could go with our Sifu back then to China for up to 3 months at a time to study. They would return with colourful stories (mostly about the lack of toilet paper and milk!) and I would see their skills increase significantly each time. It was then that I promised myself that I would one day make it to China and stay for at least 3 months. Read more

Studying Chen Style Taijquan Practical Method as an anthropologist
As a trained and graduated anthropologist I am looking at the world through a different lens. Not a big deal, I do not overrate my academic knowledge to be of any benefit in general to the world. Though drawing upon my education many credits should go out to the Practical Method and not the least to its cultural Gatekeeper Master Chen Zhonghua (19th Generation International Standard Bearer), as a immensely sophisticated system of knowledge. My academic bachelor education prepared me for a learning research project to build my Masters` thesis upon. I would gather information methodologically, learn apply analytical tools, master theoretical reasoning based on facts in logical terms, excluding speculation and organising arguments thereof in historical and contemporary anthropological debates relevant to specific, relevant subjects. Classes and Practice Sessions:
During her 7 day stay on Daqingshan during July, 2019, Disciple Applicant Yu Xin gave this 8minute interview with International Liaison Officer and Instructor James Strider. In it they discuss meeting Master Chen and the daily regime you will find on Daqingshan when you come to stay….
This time the 7th practical method workshop in Indonesia was held in Bali. Master Chen Zhonghua together with a team of trainers i.e: Wang Kai, Ling Ziming, Ling Zili, Song Zhenhua and participants from China arrived in Bali on November 19, 2019 at midnight. James Strider arrived at the 21st of November. The next day the lesson has begun and is followed by students who arrive earlier. This workshop was very special because the day before the workshop which was November 22, 2019 was also held for the first time the push hands practical method match for the Southeast Asia and Oceania region.
