Yilu Class Notes – Master Chen Zhonghua‘s Online Lesson on 4th Nov. 2020

  • Arm: don’t stretch out fully. The elbow must be bent
  • Power should come from the kua, not from the shoulder
  • The stretch must start from inside

  • Block Touching Coat: on the fourth count left hand and shoulder must turn over in a negative circle
  • The circle must be deeply engrained in every single move
  • At the beginning we are tracing the Form. We can also say we are performing or playing the Form. Later on we want to actually do Taiji. Meaning, we have to move according to principle.
  • Try to implement the principle. This will change us into another level
  • By doing Taiji we want to behave different
  • Small things are fundamental. That’s why they are so difficult to train. Nobody wants to train the small things
  • Small Change Palm Three Times: based on elbow in. When the elbow is in you are forced to turn the middle. If the elbow is out you can still move the arms. Use a rubber cord to tie the elbows in toward the body
  • Don’t move is a scientific word. It is not a feeling
  • White Crane: do 3 counts. On the 2 only withdraw the elbows. The original teaching was in 2 counts, but many people don’t know what to do with the elbow. So Master Chen added another count
  • Brush the Knee: elbow and waist are leading. In with the (right) elbow and turn with the waist. Do not move the right hand. Use a point of reference for training
  • When you don’t move the hand you are rotating your core
  • When you don’t move the hand every move is elbow-shoulder-kua. Taiji is based on elbow-shoulder-kua movements
  • When you move your hand you keep trapping yourself. It is like tying a knot on your body
  • Spool: when pulling the cord in, turn the spool. When releasing the cord out, pull the cord. Our Taiji sequence must be like that
  • Turning around without turning around
  • Rubber cord example with three dots. Doug was holding one end, Master Chen was holding the other end. In the middle there is a demarcation point. I need to revue this one: Before we switch the two ends we have to learn to use the middle (the two ends were fixed, Master Chen was moving the middle)
  • Fist under Elbow and Brush the Knee correction: Left hand never faces up
  • Single Whip: left forearm is touching the chest. Master Chen showed the specific dot on the forearm. Tile Hand
  • When there is a demarcation we never push the demarcation. We turn the waist and go to other side
  • There is no power unless there is a line. Lean with the Back: Rear elbow and shoulder must line up with front shoulder and elbow
  • Step to the left in Step up to Push with two Hands: right elbow and right kua must be together
  • Fist Draping over Body sequence: 1) move the arms into position, 2) lock the arms, 3) turn the waist
  • When stepping to the left to Step up to Push with two Hands, transition to the Change Palm Three Times: first step forward with right foot: Left and right foot are on the same line ( Master Chen showed with stick). Then step horizontal with the right foot. Left foot follows. These two steps are performed on two perpendicular lines. If we do it quickly we see a curve. We never do the curve
  • Brush the Knee (White Crane position): Doug was holding and locking Master Chen’s two arms. Move starts from inside
  • Outside is navigating (we can use the word lead, like wheels driven by steering wheel)
  • Inside is powering (engine)
  • Power must come from the joints
