Your torso is the axis, and your shoulder/elbow is the wheel.

In this video, we were reviewing exercises I was taught the day before. While going through the exercises Master Chen noticed a fundamental problem in my movement. I was having a tremendous amount of trouble bring my elbows back without getting my chest and shoulder muscles involved. My ineptitude was frustrating Master Chen, so he had me do some exercises to create a rotation. (These involved having a third person hold a staff to my body to stop it from moving, putting my chest against a desk so I had no where to move, and even suggest that I put my body against a street light so I could not move; and pulling my training partner into it.)

After physically moving me himself, and verbally coaching me through the correct movement he said:

“Your torso is the axis, and your shoulder/elbow is the wheel. Whenever you fight it is always like that.”

When going in with the elbow, the only move that should happen is a rotation inside the should joint. When going out with the hand once again the shoulder will rotate. If the adage “In With Elbow, No Hand; Out With Hand, No Elbow” is not followed, there will be movement instead of rotation. Understanding and being able to apply this principal consistently will fundamentally change the way you move.

We moved on to block touching jacket and its application. This is difficult to explain with words, but is shown in depth by Master Chen in the video. (As per usual, the principles taught earlier are reinforced in the practice of the Yilu technique.)
