…double-positive circles and the journey towards correct movement…

  • the class asked to engage in double-positive circles, with some resistance, imagine it like rubber bands, try to generate  all movement from Kua
  • need to develop an awareness of how to telegraph moves in practice, I think that GM was instructing about which body segments would initiate any movement, in this case he was saying that eventually we need to initiate movement from the bodily structures in the rear of the body
  • must develop the ability to move parts in synchronous desynchronization (yikes, I think that means not all parts move at same time, see your teacher for more detail)
  • we have to make our training real in every way possible, beginning in our minds eye
  • ‘make it real’ (maybe our new PM slogan/logo?) it belongs to GM so he’d have to give himself the prize
  • no adjacent body parts can move at the same time
  • GM demo’d moving shoulders from the joints with no tension, he circled his arms centering the movement within his shoulders joints with the arms moving like ‘windmills’
  • I often think GM is teaching us at multiple levels, during this class I got several messages that seemed to  offer insight into how to teach PM
  • the eyes must be strong
  • to do PM more correctly we must learn the procedures of movement and the procedures of how to learn properly, must learn the count, or the breakdown of each movement pattern
  • train/practice only according to the instructed procedures
  • must move martially, without preparation, from stillness to complete move without preparation, as a whole unit, as GM Hong used to say you execute a movement ‘from where you are’, as ‘…cloth of heaven with no seams…’ so there is nothing to signal to the opponent that you are about to move until the move happens, no telegraphing of intent
  • must develop the skill of mind intent

…learning to live a breath at a time…

About Doug Gauld

took one two day workshop with Master Chen years ago in Victoria...studied with Gord Muir in Victoria for about 5 yrs, during that time was coping with spinal arthritis (ankylosing spondylitis)...have moved back to Edmonton to be closer to family...trying to learn more about art...it has helped with my arthritis and perhaps if I learn it more completely and make my practice better my health will improve more than it has already...
