Move into Empty Space

Various Methods

In this video viewers get to witness Master Chen teaching various methods of how to take up empty space along with a variety of applications. This complex video requires viewers to segment each movement in a number of lessons given.  In addition, with the direct examples demonstrated, key principles inherit to practical method are embedded throughout the video.

As you watch each example of how to utilize the taking of empty space, ask yourselves:

  1. What are the procedures (what are the instructions)?  Master Chen stated, “when you follow the procedure, you greatly doubt yourself”.  “Just follow the instructions blindly”.
  2. What principles are being taught in each method of taking up space and the applications that accompany that procedure?
  3. What are your overall impressions you get from the lessons and from the students” responses?

I’ll be continually posting on this video even though the online class starts at 8 am CST on April 12th.  I encourage everyone to do the same.  I will timestamp important lessons.  During this time, I will make statements, ask questions and insert some gifs to emphasize Master Chen’s lessons.  Remember to make your comments in the reply section following the video.

I look forward to the discussions!

 Respectfully,

John Upshaw

Hello. Thank you for sharing your video and asking for my feed back.
IMHO I see Master Chen placing his root under his opponent, aiming his right leg & intention (forward energy) towards “empty space” or as I call it his “third leg” or “the missing leg of the tripod which would be behind him.
Master Chen is also sinking his C of G while maintaining the height of his bridge or contact. This helps to float his opponent. Master Chen is also moving his hips back which allows him more forward reach without over reaching.
Thank you again. Ashley
