Dot in Space

by Wilkin Ng on 2010/12/04

Here is a clip from the Dot mini-lesson to illustrate the concept of creating rotation from a fixed dot outside your body. In DQS Master Chen showed this to me but I have a hard time understanding what he meant until I draw the circle of the rotation. I hope this short clip from the Dot mini lesson clarify this technique.

Wilkin, I think it helps to see what is going on.

Master Chen:

Wilkin’s video showing the circular orbit with the dot was beneficial. In first watching your “Dot” video I thought that everything went through the dot/point somewhat linearly. But in watching Wilkin’s short modified video it appears the the dot is the center of a large circle which all the movements revolve around, is this correct? In the example shown there appears to be a “splitting” of energy around the opponents shoulder. creating kind of a lever between the shoulder point and the dot whereby the energy follows a path along the larger circle. If you were pushing the opponents arm would the resultant force follow the circle in the other direction? This seems to be a somewhat difficult concept to grasp. I think I will watch your video over again.

Thanks!

This looks like the second move of “Buddha’s Warrior Attendant Pounds the Mortar.” A couple of years ago Master Chen showed me how the torso remains relatively stable during this move as opposed to changing its orientation. This clip further explains why this is necessary. Thanks for posting, Wilkin!
