In taijiquan, there is a phrase that causes a lot of confusion. It is “Don’t use force”.
What this really says is that in taijiquan movements, we do not use direct power, instead, we use indirect power. Or in other words, the point of contact cannot issue power. Power comes from another place that reaches the point of contact. This means the point of contact only has passive power.

First 13 moves of the 24-form.
This demonstration focused on showing the internal movement of the form. Breathing is heavy to demonstrate how it works with body movements.
Overall, this is not how a person trains. It is an exaggerated demonstration.

In Practical Method, horizontal moves must be seen. Feeling and thinking you have horizontal size is not enough. It must be real!
Verical moves, however, are the opposite. By nature, vertical moves don’t create horizontal size and therefore no visible to the human eye. Whenever vertical moves are seen, it indicates there is horizontal movement involved and therefore it is an error.
In both cases, a point of reference with a physical object is the best way.

Adjust Yourself, Not Your Opponent
First you make contact, then you adjust yourself, in the end you defeat your opponent. This process is what we generally call “Adjust yourself, not your opponent”.
On making the initial contact, Peng must be present. As soon as you touch your opponent you must establish superiority over him/her. You must be lose advantage.
If you succeed in dealing with the initial contact, you already have won half the battle. Where you make the contact, do not move it. You can only make some minor adjustments. The key to success is whether while holding (Peng) your opponent, you can adjust yourself. Beside the point of contact, adjust the rest of your body to the most advantageous position.
At this point, you can beat you opponent any way you chose to. If it is not the case, your first two steps were not done right.

The older and smaller person is Shao Changyu of Juxian, Shandong. She has been taking lessons at the Rizhao Chen Zhonghua Taiji Academy for almost two year. She is a conscientious student. Most of her training was at the Academy by attending afternoon classes. She has no Push Hands training. The opponent is a college student from the Irrigation College who has martial art experiences and is currently on the college Sanda team. This match is an impromptu match. Read more

This is the first recording of Wang Kai’s routine practice in this manner. This video showed the second phase of the Chen Style Taijiquan Practical Method training. The first phase moves the outside (two hands, two feet and center/head). This is done by locked int inside centerline (with head on top). The first phase makes the movements look open and big. Every part of the body is stretched. The second phase locks the stretched out outside and only moves the inside.

Hi Sifu Chen, I really enjoy your videos. I know that different teachers have different emphases and skills, and that some skills are more “practical” in the sense that they don’t require setup or cooperation of the other person in a live situation. That said, there are 2 or 3 online taiji teachers (e,g, Liang DeHua and Adam Meisner) who use “na” energy extensively to capture the partner’s body and push him out. Do you also teach this skill, and if not, why not? Thank you for considering my question. Read more
