I just started hunyuan taichi lessons, my teacher says the PM is more advanced stage of the martial side of taichi. Should I start with Hunyuan or can I practice both at the same time? Thankyou guys.
It is possible to study both Hunyuan and Practical Method Taiji at the same time, however this can only work if you can compartmentalize the two systems and not get confused. Practical Method is easier to learn the choreography for as it has 6 sections with a number of repeated moves, plus there is so much more information on it – especially the recently released Detailed Instruction Videos for the first 2 sections – with the other sections to follow. Also applications are on many videos for Practical Method with only one video for the Hunyuan Applications.
The Hunyuan 24 is not easily made into sections for learning and only the moves pertaining to the 24 meridians are named – total number of moves is actually around 79 with few repetitions and each one subtly changed to make it difficult for beginners to see the similarities.
That being said, I was glad I learned the Hunyuan System first as a complete novice to proper Taiji, and am overjoyed and humbled by the Practical Method which is my main focus since I began learning it – very deep and rich as taught by Grandmaster Chen Zhonghua.
Best wishes!
