Chen Style Taijiquan Practical Method classes are internal martial art classes. The Chen style Taijiquan Practical Method is taught in two phases or paths. The first path (yilu) focuses primarily on internal training. This is coordinating the mind and body to move in precise, new ways; it is learning to respond to outside influences with a taiji movement and learning to turn vulnerability into power. In Taijiquan, this is taught physically in a way that the body and mind can see, feel, and understand. It then can provide a resource for many other areas of life.

Internal training of the first path has almost universal application. Chinese calligraphers, artists, chefs, dancers, acrobats and other athletes all benefit their arts through internal training. Historically, many famous scholars, monks, and others have applied the lessons internal training to the mind too.

The second path (erlu) applies the unique internal principles and practices learned in the first path to martial usage. This path is optional and is taught only after proficiency in the first path is attained and only to students of good character. Many renowned Taijiquan practitioners, revered for their martial prowess and self-defense abilities only practiced the first path. Many Taijiquan practitioners are experienced in other martial arts and became interested in Taijiquan, especially the first path, to enhance their martial abilities.

Classes generally involve three categories of activities: Learning a choreographed routine, also called yilu; Internal foundation exercises; And push hands, learning how to use internal skills to manipulate external physical forces. Extended classes address forms (yilu and erlu), weapons and advanced push hands.
