Main principle of Practical Method theory.

by Vincent Den Hengst on 2024/09/04

Master Chen asked his students of the wednesday September`s 4th 2024 class to write down what he said with regard to the  understanding of the theory. In my words I will try to repeat what he said and what it comes down to.
Chen Style Taijiquan Practical Method movements must contain in the following:
  • One must truly not move.
  • This means one must have a centre, a centre line or a dot. This can be the centre line as a vertical stick which can rotate from the top as the non moving point.
  • As the centre is established, then the two ends must be moved.
  • When the two ends are moved, one`s producing a lever.
Adding to this main principle:
-The pivoting point of the lever changes in the form, in yilu. The changing of the pivoting point on one`s body is what one`s trying to achieve in push hands, fighting and for good health.
-Templates, by which one trains, are not real and don`t produce (much) power. Though learning by templates has great value in learning and reaching higher level of taiji skills and understanding. Actions are real and produce real power and conform to the main principle.

About Vincent Den Hengst

My name is Vincent den Hengst from the Netherlands, Utrecht, where I started practicing Hunyuan Xinyi Chen Style Taijiquan under sifu James Fletcher in 2004. In 2013 I stepped over to Practical Method after a workshop organised by Grandmaster Chen Liansheng and taught by Grandmaster Chen Zhonghua at the Glind, The Netherlands. In 2014 & 2015 I went to Daqinshan for two months in total and attended different workshops in Europe since 2013. Since 2015 I participated at some open competitions in China and the Netherlands. To me Chen Style Taijiquan Practical Method as taught by Grandmaster Chen Zhonghua is the highest form of martial art. Feeling deeply grateful and lucky to be able to practice.
