– we must learn to move from the inside out
– learn how to bring the rear hand over, how to ‘go over’ with the shoulder to facilitate the conversion of vertical energy into horizontal energy through that joint
– at the beginner’s level we just ‘trace’ the choreography, we are just playing or performing, eventually, we must learn and apply the principles to the form correctly, otherwise, it is not real Practical Method (PM) Taijiquan
– learn and practice the following elements of ‘small change palm 3 times’:
1. when elbow comes in torso must rotate proportionally
2. use a rubber tube to restrict elbow movement, pinning them to the torso, for training practice
3. elbow and waist leads the movement
– all of PM Taijiquan is how the elbow and kua work together, learn how to turn around without turning around, study the elbow and kua spatial and power relationship as they flip over scissor-like in the same spot in space around the central body rod
– study how when the hand or foot moves away from the body core it is pulling away from the central spool unwinding in a way, then how when elbow or knee returns towards the core the energy and physical structures can be said to be re-spooling or rewinding
– there is no power in PM unless there is a razor-thin line
– always pay attention to the small details
– experiment in our PM stepping how to step up on the line then make a right angle step off the line without telegraphing intent with micro indications
– we have to learn how to make every single PM movement from the inside out
– work at not moving the outside bodily structures, let the outside navigate while the inside, like an auto engine, provides the power to move the outside through space
– elbows and kuas are our PM major body power sources, and both do not move the way we might expect them to
