Superb video for correcting power transmission problems. Separation, gearing, proportionality, compression and tension (expansion) are explained and demonstrated in the foundation drills and yilu. Examples of unconscious excess movement revealed. Proper movement of the shoulder, chest and (3-way) head splitting clearly shown. Modulation of the joints resulting from core rotation demonstrated. A great video to watch and practice with for all levels of students.
An incredible lesson! Master Chen demonstrates many foundation exercises and emphasizes the importance of proportional movements. This means, for example, the arm doesn’t move alone, but in concert with other body parts. Master Chen demonstrates slowly and deliberately, explaining exactly how we should practice. This lesson is an integral part of everyone’s practice, and I would tell my Tai Chi brothers not to practice again until they’ve watched this video.
Wow. Master Chen outdoes himself in this one in my opinion. Proportionality is a topic that I was trying to grasp for some time before. Here Master Chen not only shows clearly how he is capable of producing proportional movements and how it is done. Then in the second part of the video gives away in detail how the shoulder actually has to be able to move in our system and in the fetching water move especially.
The more I learn of Master Chen the more he strikes me as a genius of movements and of teaching these delicate intricacies as well. Thank you Master Chen for this great Video!
P.S.: Buy this one guys!!
Extremely helpful instructions on relation of proportionality and non movement in the foundations and from there into any movement of the yilu form. A must for me to have some practical reference to add to the my workshop experiences.
Instructions by Master Chen in this video enhanced my learning of isolation and separations and created understanding of how to start learning new relationships between body parts and that if movements are proportional they are initiated from the dantian. ‘Movements without 50% in this way and this way, you are stuck.’
