It’s very hard to “go down” during pushhand, and in this video Master Chen shows how.
1. We can’t move the contacting point. If the opponent is also going down, we can never become lower then him. This is also a “separation”.
2. Changing the perspective. In the demonstration, the student pushed Master Chen in his waist. By not moving the hand and the waist, the height of the student is set to the waist. So by moving the body part below the waist(in this case, the knee), he is lower than the student.
1:38 when the opponent is strong, we can also manipulate the contacting point, so it’s easier for us to go down.
From 2:25, Master Chen used a very straight forward example to explain why is it a separation and why is it important. Without separation, you can’t hit.
