Great Video! In addition to the applications and drills which are always so helpful to see, there is further insight given into many important topics. I’ll try to restrain myself from posting the many revelations I think I had, but wanted to share one that seems so directly relevant to everything in Practical Method…. during the instruction on ” Power, rotation, and compression”, Master Chen talks about how we lose power when we rotate vs. just a straight line power push, and that we have to combine power with rotation. I realized this is extremely important in terms of accuracy and penetration. When you create spiral rotations, “raw” power is diminished, but, it is more concentrated into a line, so another type of power is gained. A rifle is an excellent example of this. Older rifles had smooth barrels and were very inaccurate. Newer barrels have spiral grooves inside of them called “rifling”. When the bullet travels through the “rifled” barrel some of the energy is drained off in causing the bullet to rotate through the spiral chamber, but accuracy (staying on a line) is greatly enhanced. It also improves penetration when the bullet actually hits something. So even though the smooth barrel will achieve a greater velocity (and have more power) we would prefer the precision and consolidated energy imparted by the rotation. One easy way to test the consolidation of energy from rotation is with a waxwood staff. Push the staff directly into a wall. it will flex and bend and energy will “leak” sideways causing protrusions and indentations. Now rotate as you push. the wood fibers grab onto each other and the spiral force is contained in a line. You can feel it go all the way to the tip. It will bite, tear, and begin to bore through and penetrate into the sheetrock. A very different result than pushing it straight into the wall with more force. Just one of many things rotation does for us………….there are many layers of fantastic information in this video, which I’m sure, as with all Master Chen’s videos, I will continue to discover more each time I watch them.

Just wanted to add a quote from ” 2011 Germany Practical Method Workshop 2 ” as to the relationship between : power, rotation, and compression — ” Every time you turn (rotation) , you create space, you then use the movement to FILL the space. It’s different from you just pushing it….”— Chen Zhonghua
