Master Chen has uploaded a more detailed video demonstrating an exercise to develop the hinges. It is based on move 79 in Yilu turn and lotus kick, with an additional rotation to develop the hinge on the left side of the body.

This might be a “if you have to ask, you’ll never get it” situation.

Characteristic of a door: the door is hold up by hinges in a straight line, thereby it has an axis, thereby it can rotate, thereby it can open and close. We need to imitate that damn door when we practice Taiji.

Hi Daniel, Allan, and James! Hope you all are doing well.

I, too, thought of the door hinge analogy, but “open the door exercise combination training” makes me think that it might be some sort of intense regimen designed to push a practitioner over a mental/physical threshold. I was especially intrigued by the nominal phrase “combination training” and would be tickled pink to see a brief description or a video clip. I’m not as interested in the “how” as I am in the “what” of it at this point. Perhaps it is an appellation for something I have experienced before. Perhaps not.

Great video, Shifu. It articulates the concept very well. I am so glad I purchased it.

Everyone: this is a first of a kind and a must see if you want to understand kua in action.
