Another great Phoenix workshop and at a cool time in January, 2018! Learned many things, among them:
• My structure’s wrong. It’s held up by muscles and can collapse.
• My Yilu came from videos and I saw some things in the group practice that I need to correct, a couple are: the second repulse monkey travels in a diagonal direction and not straight back; just before the jumping kick the left hand strikes forward in a knife edge.
• Don’t look for meaning; just do the movements as directed.
• All movements are created by rotation.
• Water doesn’t go back, always goes forward and around obstacles.
• Power isn’t used except to stretch so that you can release like a bow and arrow.
• After 10,000 Yilus you won’t have to think to do them.
• Add one push without removing original push.
• Let the opponent go his way, and then you go your way.
• Don’t fight the opponent except to distract him from what you intend to do.
• When you no longer have to think about the choreography you can target different aspects to work on.
• You are looking for your own awkwardness in push hands, at which point you are in a superior position.
• Power comes in from opponent as dot. You have to split it and create yin yang separation.
• You don’t want to do the normal thing of using muscles, instead get into vulnerable position where muscles won’t work and use ligaments to dominate opponent.
A lot of things to work on between now and the next workshop. Thanks, Ping, for bringing the master and allowing us such close contact with him. Steve Doob
