At a higher level when the inside of the body is stretched out, the outside frames (structure) of the body should start to close. This is in compliance with the principle of “the energy must be released but structure remain intact”.

Here are some simple explanations of the structure and energy movements of the knee. Read more

Now people visiting Daqingshan can have one card for door admission, hotel charges, restaurant charges, purchase of any items on Daqingshan.

Leaking out of energy is a general error among Taiji learners. It occurs in many places and happens quite often.

This is quite difficult to explain. Let me use an example and imagine the following scenario:. Read more

1. Look: Use your eyes to observe and remember.

  1. Do not move your body. Do not copy. If you copy at this stage, your brain will link what you see to what you can copy. This may give a false impression that you’ve understood the movement. This is how bad habits are formed.
  2. Just focus on whether you’ve seen clearly. You can see it repeatedly. You can change your angle and point of observation.
  3. Do not analyse. Do not judge the quality of the movement. At this stage, right or wrong, it doesn’t matter. Read more

This exercise has nothing to do with the demonstration by some masters being pushed by a line of people, mostly more than ten, to demonstrate how strong and rooted they are. This is an exercise Master Chen Zhonghua used at a workshop in Victoria, B.C. Canada in 2006 to train the pusher to get used to the experience of pushing into something very strong but is human. When I asked about the concept of “needle wrapped in cotton”, the master countered with a question, “Do you fight with cotton or with needle? I answered that I would use needle instead of cotton. “In that case, why did you ask me, then?” the master said. “Cotton” is just a decoy to “cheat” the enemy is off his guard, make him think you are not strong. When you use your power to get him, he does not have the time to react. The bottom line is that we train power “jin”. Without power there is no basis for anything in martial art. Read more

A: No, we see GM Hong still had a very high skill when he was old. Taiji skill is just like riding a bike, or swimming, you will never lose it once you master it. Internal strength is not based on muscle, but rotational joint dexterity for precise manipulation of power.

A: Other Chen style is for form competition and has been modified so it is easier to learn. Martial art form is more precise and is harder to learn.

This “natural” is not your “natural”. The master said so right at the first meeting. His explanations later on were mainly based on how to separate “self” from the objects that we observe. The “nature” taiji talks about is about the real nature out there. It is the one outside of self. Not the one the observer feels, sees, or believes.  The master used the analogy of chopsticks to illustrate the Read more

In stepping, the weight must remain in the center. This ensures balance of the body. Move the body weight to one leg. This does not mean shifting weight as in physical shape. Press the body weight onto that leg until you feel that the weight is solidly on that leg. At the same time, the other leg is empty and is pushed out by the pressing leg. Anchor the leg that steps out. Pull your original leg close to the newly anchored leg. Read more
