Leverage

by Richard van Berkum on 2011/10/17

In a video I’ve seen Master Chen says “Lever has to come out.” I have a few questions about that:

Could someone give an example of that? There a 3 hinges in the body. Are they used to create leverage? Do you use the (closed)kua to create leverage?

Thanks for you reply Alex,

That’s the video I mean. Master chen says “For lever you have to have three points, two moving and one fixed point.” So What/where are those points? Are the places involved I mentioned above? I guess you have to discover them by training(“The body felt it.”) of course, but an explanation would be welcome.

In this video, the point of contact where the opponent is applying power is the fulcrum of the lever. This point is fixed. The parts of the body behind and in front of this point are able to move/rotate. If you move the fulcrum, however, you will not be able to apply leverage. According to my understanding, “lever has to come out” means that you have to learn to establish a fulcrum and use such lever action with automaticity. In the context of critiquing a student who was pushing hands, I have heard Master Chen say “the power is starting to come out,” meaning that the student was beginning to express the proper method of power generation as an automatic response pattern.

I too have been practicing getting the non-moving point at one of the points on contact, but here is a demonstration, which shows a different non-moving point

around 2:10 and on is quite helpful

In this particular case, you could make one of the points of contact a non-moving point (the right arm for example), then move around that point.

Thanks for posting that other clip, Alex. In light of our discussion, I saw some things that I had not noticed in my previous viewing of it.

your welcome, actually, I had the same thing happen. Upon reading the topic, I knew videos showed this concept, but when I went to look at it, I saw more than I saw the first time too. 🙂

Lever is a straight line with a fulcrum. That’s where the two end points and one unmoving point come from. The principle is important because it shows that power has to be generated from the rear end like in teeter totter, this is opposite of what is normally done. This principle can be used to return opponent force by using o force to increase force on the back end.
