When i first tried this my heels lifted off the ground and i nearly fell over. I know this wasn’t supposed to happen, but was still very exciting. I had a taste of the thigh as a driver of power through the body.
Isolating the thigh is very difficult, and will take much practice. It helped me to focus my eyes on an objct and using the eyes as the lever point, gently twist my body, push off from the foot, and twist thigh. This gave me my first taste.

Very good! When the body is not open (body parts cannot separate and cannot rotate on their own), the foot will not be able to stay on the floor solidly. This is one piece of the puzzle in the concept of the foot standing as if it were a stake in the ground (note that I am not referring to standing post, zhan zhuang).

This video is a gem in explaining the actual mechanics to the often vague reference to “opening” and “closing” of the kua.
