5:08 to 5:23 – What stood out for me was the separation that Master Chen demonstrated when he was able to deal with the opponent taking out his space. Master Chen did the first move of the positive circle, which seemed obvious at the top for the purposes of the demonstration. When the opponent took up space at the top Master Chen executed the split that occurs in the first and second move of the positive circle (as seen in Changing Direction in Positive Circle video at about 1:00 where Master Chen demonstrates the energetic splits).

So, does this mean that if an opponent knows to complete the second part of a move to take out my space, I should not complete my move? Instead, the next thing I should do is carry out the first half of the same move or another move?

Now, I need to keep practising not to reset my moves to achieve adherence.

I played around with the Yilu today by trying not to let go of what I’ve gained in the torso and armpit /shoulder area rather than resetting after each action (please note that I highly doubt I’m doing it right but I’m trying anyway).

It felt as though my torso and armpit/shoulder joint was getting wound up tighter and tighter; just like a wind-up toy. By the end of the form, I just wanted to let go of the tightness and have my head spring back up.

I’m sure I would have let go of the result of actions between moves but the Yilu felt different from what I would normally do.

Taking out space, combined with not giving up what you have gained. Using structure instead of force to limit the opponent’s movement. Superb video as always.
