太極拳,纏法也。纏法如螺絲形運於肌膚之上,平時運動恒用此勁,故與人交手,自然此勁行乎肌膚之上,而不自知,非久於其道不能也。其法有:進纏,退纏;左纏,右纏,上纏,下纏;裏纏,外纏;順纏,逆纏;大纏,小纏。而要莫非以中氣行乎其間,即引即進,皆陰陽互爲其根之理也。或以爲軟手;手軟何能接物應事?若但以迹象視之,似乎不失於硬,故以爲軟手。其周身規矩:頂勁上領,檔勁下去(要撐圓,要合住):兩肩松下,兩肘沈下,兩手合住,胸向前合;目勿旁視,以手在前者爲的;頂不可倒塌,胸中沈心靜氣;兩膝合住勁,腰勁下去;兩足常用鈎勁,須前後合住勁,外面之形,秀若處女,不可帶張狂氣,一片幽閒之神,儘是大雅風規。至於手中,其權衡皆本於心,物來順應,自然合進退、緩急、輕重之宜。此太極之陰陽相停,無少偏倚,而爲開合之妙用也。其爲道豈淺鮮哉!

The so called “harmonize” is to sink both shoulders and make sure both elbows stick to the ribs. Then you cave in the chest. Hand, elbow and torso will become one unit sticking to the opponent without any space. The rear leg will form a stick that supports this torso unit. This is called “fully harmonized”. It is also what is normally called Peng energy. Please let me know whether my understanding is correct.

What you said is correct. You must train the routines so that you can “harmonize” with your opponent under all situations. If you cannot, the theory will be empty.
