Leading with the front kua

by Gene Hess on 2011/09/06

Hi Master Chen,

I have been practicing the Yilu, trying to make sure that I am leading w/ the front kua on each move. It makes the moves feel different.

Leading with the front kua makes it feel like the other pieces of the puzzle (that you teach) fit together. Leading with the front kua makes it feel like it is easier to get the feeling of “filling concrete” and pulling myself forward with the front leg (instead of pushing myself forward with the back foot).

I’m just checking in to see if I am on the right track.

Thanks much,

Gene

Gene, you are definitely on the right track. The front kua takes the lead but the driving power should still be on the rear foot. This is part of the yin yang separation. Before this revelation, you were only able to have your power either in front or on the rear. Now it is different.
